Grantham Gingerbread is England's oldest commercially traded biscuit. The biscuits were first invented in the 1740s by William Eggleston, a baker from the English town of Grantham, Lincolnshire. For the following 250 years, the divine little gingerbread biscuits were a quintessential part of Grantham life.
When the last producer of the biscuits closed its doors in the early 2000s, Grantham Gingerbread biscuits were threatened with extinction. Fortunately, local baker Alistair Hawken saved the biscuit's recipe and brought it back to life. Thanks to him and his team, we can all continue to enjoy this wonderful Grantham treat.
